Can't format drive as fat32 in Linux - stays NTFS

Slackware 9.1, kernel 2.6.3

I just got a new S-ATA drive and I'm trying to format it as FAT32 in linux. I already have a drive exactly like this one installed and set up correctly, but it has been quite a while since I did it, so I think I'm missing something.

When I run fdisk -l the new drive is listed as:

/dev/sdb1 * 1 14582 1172210208+ 7 HPFS/NTFS

I have no idea why it insists it is an NTFS drive though - I have tried these steps multiple times and even after a reboot nothing changes at all! I can read and write to the drive, but the other drive in this computer that is exactly the same displays an extened partition with a FAT32 partition. I want this one set up the same way! Here are my steps:

fdisk /dev/sdb1

n ( create new partition )
p ( primary )
1 ( partition number )

t
c (change type to FAT32)

W ( write the new table)

Then I format it....

mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/sdb1

It does all the steps without error, but when I restart the computer it mounts the drive, and I can use it, but it still is listed as NTFS. What it going on?

Thanks

Jason

uh - yeah, /dev/sdb not /dev/sdb1 fixed my issue. So often I try for hours to do something and then figure it out the moment I ask sorry.
