Question Camera image capture and real time processing

Hi
I am starting a project in robotics which requires to capture image from a webcam and do real time processing like motion detection etc. I know this can be done on windows but I do wish to do it on Linux. I have Fujifilm pinepix A300 camera and using gcc and OpenCV library for processing.
But I cannot get to connect camera in webcam mode. When I connect the camera using USB, gThumb image viewer downloads all photos, but cannot communicate with camera. I believe the required module is not loaded. Also which software will capture images after certain time and give me jpeg(Even if I wish to use avi file made previously and not from camera).

Thanks
Sumeet
