Build is killed because system is out of memory

I was trying to compile Webkit for GTK along with debug symbols. LibwebkitGtk.so (or something similar) got killed because the system was out of memory. ld was consuming about 80% of memory on my 512mb laptop. Is there nothing I can do about this? I wanted to learn how webkit worked by using a debugger, but this makes it seem like that is never going to happen.

Any ideas?

Set up (more) swap-space, either a swap-partition or a swap-file.
