BSD style mount union on Linux

Hi All,

I am building an embedded linux system with flash as the storage. In order to extend the life of the flash device I want to mount it read only and then mount ram disks over the top of /var etc in the style of BSD union so the files 'underneath'are still visible.

Can this be done ? or is their a better way ?

Many thanks,
Andrew
