Booting up takes SO long!

Booting up takes 5+ minutes
Sorry for the length of the log, i just didn't know what to leave in/out. I think it may be because of my hard-drive. I have formatted it a few times now but booting up still takes a long time every time, its really starting to annoy me!
Thanks in advance.

This is my dmesg log:

Some Linux flavours like Mandrake allow you to hit ESC while booting to get a more verbose listing of the boot process. Using this you can somtimes spot obvious problems. For example if you have a laptop and boot it up without a live network connection then the part that says "bringing up LAN0" can take a long time and hold everything else up. In these instances you can optionally remove it from the boot sequence and hence speed things up.

pingu 07-14-2004 04:38 AM

There seems to be something fishy here.
I'm referring to the problem "error finding DMA" but also this:
Quote:

Swsusp 1.0.3: Missing or invalid swap partition location (resume= parameter). Disabled.
swap is turned on later, though.

Would be interesting to know what parts of the bootup procedure takes a long time?
Also, please post the output of
# cat /var/log/messages
that will show the rest of the startup process.

MS3FGX 07-14-2004 03:24 PM

I had the exact same problem and boot messages.

The drive is dead, or at least, is going to be very soon. Copy everything you want off of it and get a new drive, ASAP.

I got those errors and the extremely long boot times on one of my servers. Within a few hours, the drive sounded like a lawn mower and I couldn't access it.

Shade 07-14-2004 05:54 PM

For one thing, I noticed that you've got your DVD and CDRom on the primary IDE bus -- IDE0.
That could be causing problems, though I've never heard of it. Normally your hard drives are on the primary bus, rather than the secondary bus as you have it.

Try switching the buses. Make sure your IDE cables are rated for U-DMA. Are jumpers set right?

I have tried unplugging both my cd and dvd drive yet no improvement.

Here is my cat /var/log/messages log in two parts and the un-important bits taken out (ie things that happened before i shut it down)
