booting through loadlin

Hi

I have been using slack since 2 years. I want to try out some new distros
like Debian and Fedora.

Slack allows you not to install LILO and use Loadlin instead
I have a boot floppy through which I boot and give the command

mount root=/dev/hda8

I have windows 98 also installed on my PC
Slack is installed on its own ext2 partition on my Pc

Is this possible in the case of

Debian

Fedora

I have the impression that bootloaders like LILO and GRUB write to the MBR
and eventually my Windows installation would go bust

If it is possible I am eager to try these 2 dstros as I have the Cds available
Any informative links are also welcome.

Thanks and Regards

as a fc1/rh user i can tell u its possible grub and lilo are indeed written to the Master Boot Recored but they dont delete the sys file's (io.sys,ms-dos,command) of windows that were written also to the mbr this way u can boot windows or linux. iam not sure if it will work perfect for win98 (u might need to add some commands to boot.ini in windows ,better do some search), i use winxp and it works fine for me,2nd option for u is to use the boot image's that are on the 1st rh/fc1 cd under images directory and there u can find an image that will boot linux for u from floppy u can use ither rawutil (in windows) or dd ( in linux).hope that will help u goodluck.
