i have a 160 gb portable hdd (USB) and on it is a dual partition of win xp and fc3. now i wish to boot this hdd by connecting it to my laptop which runs suse 10. however on entering the bios, and choosing the portable drive i try to boot from it , but end up getting a blank screen with "GRUB."

what are the solutions presented by thee, oh reader?

start grub, after you boot a rescue system
grub > root (hd2,1) 2 means 3'd disk, 1 second partion)
grub > setup (hd0,0)
grub > quit
> reboot

Yes I think so, but you have to check your BIOS

I am looking for a definite answer because as far as I am aware XP does not support being boot by a USB device. It can't be booted by a floppy and can't be booted from a logical partition.

I have tried it from a USB hard disk and couldn't get anywhere.

Even Linux needs a specially rigged kernel for booting from a USB device. All the systems I tried on a USB hard disk are installable but unbootable becuase the kernel panics.

It depends what you mean by boot from USB with regards to XP. do you mean get to the prompt that says safe mode, safe mode w netowkrin etc. Because im quiet certain it is impossible to boot windows XP without installing it.
