boot problems
 

i installed mandrake 8 (i think) a few weeks ago, andf i love it to bits.
but the other day i tried to load it and i get an error message

error 15:file not found

having looked at the command options in grub (v0.92) it looks as tho its halting on the line

initrd(hd1,1)/initrd.img

I got hold of a bit of software for viewing my linux partitions from windows
and was quite confused to see initrd.img sitting quite comfortably in my boot directory (hdb1) (linux is on a different HDD to windows).

I don't much like the idea of just reinstalling grub, cos i don't want ot loose my windows partition either.
equally i don't want to reinstall the whole linux thing again cos i had it all just as i wanted it. and it took me hours to download the java SDK.

Has any one got any ideas?
I'm feeling a bit up the creek at the moment.

hdb1 is hd(1,0) in grub terminology. Could that be your problem?

Hard Drive
 

Your hard drive could have been dammaged, or you may just need to reinstall Mandrake, in which case, if you have another computer, download the newest version, Mandrake 9.2. You can get it at the following URL: http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=29 . Download the i586 distribution. You probably won't lose any files if you reinstall your old version or install the 9.2 distribution, but I don't know for sure, as you were getting that error message.

thanks for that, i just changed hda(1,1) to hda(1,0) and it all works fine again. how would something like that have just spontaneously happened one day????
