Boot linux from a NAS/USB?
 

I am thinking about getting this: http://www.ximeta.com/products/netwo...disk/index.php

Will I be able to boot linux off of the drive with using a boot disk? My bios currently does not support booting to USB.

Also, with a boot disk, will it be possible to boot off of the network function of this disc?

I took a look at the linux manual for this. They have drivers for (some versions of) SuSE, Mandrake and RH. I didn't see any source code, or any indication you could use this thing without proprietary drivers. If this is correct my advice is: don't buy this thing :tisk:

It appears that the drivers are just to configure the thing... I'm not sure however.

I may just pickup some 160 gig drives that I just found a good deal on. $60 :)

I just had a more careful read. They say you can use it as a standard USB device w/o special drivers. But it looks like you need their driver to mount it in ethernet mode.

So if you set up a boot disk to boot a kernel with the linux USB drivers you could mount this thing via USB and run linux off it. But maybe it is not then really a network disk???

It appears as though it is a network drive. I guess you just have to have drivers to use it...

I think that I am just goning to use a soon to be not in use 80 gig WD 8MB cache (I'm going to upgrade my RAID array, and I will have two extra) and purchase an external drive enclosure. I'll use one 80 gig to upgrade my 20 gig internal Linux drive, and the other to transfer files as an external drive :)

Then I'll only have .56 terabytes. What shall I do with the left over 20 gig drive??? Hmm, Linux on PS2 sounds fun.

An external enclosure such as this: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...145-843&depa=1 and my 80 gig WD should work in linux, right? I don't think that the idea of booting from USB will happen any more, but I will be able to mount it in linux to move data, correct?
