Blank screen script

Is there a specific script or command I can run that switches off the monitor (as in energy saving type thing)? Just wondering, I think it would be useful. Or is there an app which does the same job?

hello,
xset +dpms will do it - if you are looking for a specific time the xset --help should help.

you can also use a ~/.xscreensaver file

No, I mean is there a specific command which you run and that switches off the monitor immediately?
