BIG RH7.1 Installation Problem

BIG RH7.1 Installation Problem

i have a bit of a tricky problem I yhad RH7.1 "redhat" and, i recently uninstalled everything when i first installed it i done it frome a friends cd, i then copied the cd but i didnt do a direct copy, what i did was copied all of the files to my hard driv and then reburned both of the 2 discs without making them bootable, i wrote the boot image to a floppy so i have a bootable floppy, but when i get to the instalation screen i get en error saying redhat cd was not detected in the cd-rom drive so i tried installing it from my hd only to find out that with ver 7.1 in order to install from your hd the files must be in iso format so i figure ok, so i convert each group of files into to seperaete iso's and i get an error saying redhat install images were not found in that directory so i figured what the hell and burbned the iso "as an image" to a cd and then tried to install and i still get an error so i have a 6.0 ver of redhat only half my crap isnt supported so what i did ias made a boot disk with that tried to fool it and just tried to install from hd with that installer because it insatalls from the base and rpm packages and not the whole iso, but i got a RAM error PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since you are able to be here at LQ, you have an internet connection. Your best bet may be to go to www.linuxiso.org, click on the RedHat link, and download your own set of CD ISO images. Linuxiso also has a good set of burning instructions for creating your own CDs that will be good from now 'til forever!!

And please, next time, write your questions in well constructed sentences. It's much easier to understand a problem/question/comment that way.

Have a great Linux day :D :D !!

Sorry

sorry for the grammar ill try harder.

I dont plan on dling any new iso's, there has "GOT TO BE" a way to do this without dling a new iso I have ALL of the cd files.

All the bases and RPMS, and even SRPMS all the images , everthing.

And i wont stop until i figur this through. but i wont dl any ISO's
because my whople agenda is to make "THIS" work

Well this is just a guess, but here it goes:

I think the reason the CD gives you a "Can't Find a Redhat CD" is because when you burned the files onto the Cd, you had the option to name the CD, and you failed to name it, to the exact name of the RedHat CD.

So if you can find out what the name of each of the CDs has to be, that might work. This is only a guess, so I recommend using a CD-RW for this.

Hope you understand what I mean.

pretty sure i know what you mean in FAct, this has been a theory of mine as well however. i have a Rh 6.0 cd and i find out form talking to people that the names are identical so i tried this name and it says the name is invalid because i have spaces but this one has spaces. somethin i havent quite figured out yet.

By the way when you say name, i assume you meann volume label?

.

volume label, and whatever the disc name is also. I do think that probably is the problem. :)

ok i understand how, to change the volume label but ive looked all over for a way to change the name and cant find one. however i do no what you mean i no of 2 names on my lin 6.0 cd
i have nero 4.0
easy cd cdreator
and disk jugler
so any info on how to change the name on any of these would help.
thanks

the name of the cd has nothing to do with booting from it as it doesn't read the name of the cd to boot. its looking for a boot image to boot from and most likely when your burning all the files to the cd, its not making the cd a bootable cd in which a iso file is and does.
its like when you install lilo to boot after an install to the /partition instead of the MBR, you have to indicate the / partition as a bootabe partition.

also just copying the files over probably doesn't make it very reliable as there can be corruption while burning and copying to the cd, probably why your getting a RAM error or its stalling/not installing all the packages from the disc.

I think your better off just downloading the iso images or just burning your friends disc directly making a copy of a cd.

but i have made the cd bootable as well as burned an iso image to it containg the files

but if its not working, then something didn't burn right or get copied right..
again, your better off copying the files directly from a redhat cd or downloading the iso images. I don't think there is anyway you can check the files after just copying them to your hard drive, then burning them to a cd and or making them into iso from from the bare files, especially if your doing this in windows..

but, trickykid, I've burn way too many cd's to count them, and I know for a fact that during installation phase, far more than less, let it be program or operating system it doesn't matter, they first look at the name and volume of cd, after they checked that and it matched to what it's looking for, then it goes and looks at the data in the cdrom. Once the instalation is complete then it is true that in many cases the volume and name of the cd don't matter anymore, but for some reason during installation phase it does.
So, I think that you should try making another set of cd's, since the name and volume of cd's can only be specified before you burn the cd, and then it should work I believe.
