Best way to update RH9 kernel?

I've got a RH9 installation on a new system with nforce2. What would be the best way to upgrade to the newest RH kernel. I've tried with the rpm and the source with rpm -i. But I think there's a better way. I'm using Grub as the bootloader. The way I did it, the new kernel isn't selected by default and the other is still listed. Also, is it best to install the newest kernel before going about installing drivers and all?

Well, the best way to do it is to grab the generic source from kernel.org and compile it yourself. There is a nice tutorial in the Slackware forum, and in other places.
