Start rhythmbox.
Plug in i-thingy.
Two windows pop up, cancel them both.
"Tred's iPod" appeared on the desktop and under "Devices" in thythmbox.
Drag 'n' drop music.
Use the "Eject" icon before you unplug it.
i was not able to drag into rhythmbox. nor was i able to import a music folder (nothing happened when i did this).

You don't say what linux distro you are using, but I am guessing that it's mint-something.

My experience was with ubuntu 10.04, running gnome and using rhythmbox to access my ipod touch. As I said, it "worked out of the box".

I can't help you with "sony software requiring M$" But there are video editing programs for linux,
Cinelerra and PiTiVi come to mind. See here

Hi,
I have a very similar problem whose solution I am unable to find on this or any other forums maybe due to me overlooking something very basic. My ipod touch is being detected ( Im running Ubuntu 10.04, just as background info ) and when i open rhythmbox, it also detects the device and im able to see its contents. Its empty at the moment so when i drag an mp3 from the music library to the device icon on the left menu on rhythmbox i get the following error:

ERROR TRANSFERRING TRACK
Error while getting peer-to-peer dbus connection: The name :1.81 was not provided by any .service files

Im at a complete dead end at what to do with this and any input would really be appreciated. Thanks

WikkityWak,

I haven't seen this error, and the interweb search engines aren't helping me understand it.

Some thoughts:

- Have you applied all the updates since you first installed ubuntu? (System - Administration - Update manager, Click "Check", Click "Install Updates").

- Have you ever used your touch (it is unusual to hear of one that is "empty") before?

- When I first got mine (long ago) I had to use a windows computer & itunes to get it "registered" or something, before it would work.
Have you done this? Maybe use itunes and win (or a Mac) to put at least one of your CDs on it (don't ask me how, I only used itunes the once).

Note: If you register your touch by connecting it to a Mac, I think it'll be formatted with a Mac filesystem, this may cause you grief with using it with linux later.

Welcome to LQ!

Yea ive been using my touch extensively before but when i reformatted my pc to linux, I tried a whole array of methods to get my touch to sync with any software in linux. In result when i go to my touch and search available capacity, it says 0kb, so im going to try to see the status of my touch on my other windows pc using itunes and see if i can format or empty it out and re-register the itouch and try it again with Rhythmbox.
ill report back in with results

ok so i went on windows and restored my touch and updated it and all the shazam. then i transferred some music onto it using itunes on my windows pc. then when i connect it with my linux pc and yet again it is detected and rhythmbox can see the songs i have on the touch. yet when i go to drag a song from my library into the ipod, i get the same error.

ERROR TRANSFERRING TRACK
Error while getting peer-to-peer dbus connection: The name :1.81 was not provided by any .service files

so im not really sure what to do about this now. should i just bear the inconvenience of going to the next room when i want to edit my touch or install windows alongside linux. i dont want to do that since i want to run linux solo since besides this one problem, i love it.

p.s. i also went to the update manager you mentioned and when i pressed 'check' it doesnt ask me to install any updates so im guessing it is up to date

Tredegar,
Hell Yeah Man! your idea worked! i'm listening to tunes as I write (eddie rabbitt - turn your light on.... . oh, you can see what OS people are using by looking on the lower left of posts, right next to the penguin . the ipod i'm using is a 1GB shuffle of some sort. the manual doesn't say so i guessed 1st and 2nd generation, but that was never involved (ID of ipod had no bearing on the process).
here is what i did yall:
- with ipod in, initialized/formatted it then unmounted and unplugged. (not necessary i doubt)
- installed rhythmbox from synaptic.
- started rhythmbox.
- plugged in ipod and rhythmbox detected it by itself
- the music just showed up in the "music" folder (this is where i was confused.
- i dropped dragged that music into the ipod folder and let it transfer.

i'm not sure if i put the music in the "music" folder, but after it was there it was just moving it to the "ipod" folder and letting it transfer.

gtkpod and amarok might work, but i couldn't figure out how.

mp3 player is easier

i took a new Phillips 4GB mp3 player and got it working in seconds.

- plug it in
- right click and format ((it becomes a drive rather than a media player))
- then double click the mp3 drive icon in file browser
- drag and drop music into the file browser
- unmount, disconnect and play music

i think it mounted itself.

much easier than with the M$ and apple stuff.

I found the following steps very helpful: (thanks to original poster)
1. Must transfer one file to Ipod using Itunes and Windows
(hold your nose while doing it)
2. Install GoodReader app via App Store
3. TRANSFER PROCESS --- Connect Ipod (duh)
4. In GoodReader press Wifi Transfer (icon on lower left corner)
will notice server and port info
mine was 192.168.2.2:8080
5. use Nautilus option: "Connect to Server"
select: WebDAV (http)
enter server: 192.168.2.2
enter port: 8080
6. new incidence of Nautilus will open
7. WebDAV will be seen through which files can be transferred to ipod.
Works with many file types: pdf, mp4, mp3, etc.
Hope this helps.
