hi...
i wanted to set up a bbs type system on my linux box, and was wondering if there was a program out there that might help me, or if there was a way to do it without one, etc. thanks
A quick Googling/linux for "BBS Software " comes up with several thousand matches, apparently. Not tried any, so I can't suggest any. Also, you should try freshmeat and slashdot.
If you are a dab hand at programming/scripting, then I've no doubt that you could do it using the tools already provided with all distros, however, if there are programs already around that make it easier, then that's good in my book!
I've also no doubt that there's probably a fairly minimalist distro floating around on the internet that is designed purely for this.
wow, a distro JUST for bbs's?? that's wacky. i've got peanut linux, and that's really minimalist, but it's doing fine. right now i'm trying to get citadel to work...
Whacky? Not really. If you check out Ibiblio's site you'll find plenty of 1 disk distros used for minimalist hosting, and such. I imagine that a BBS-oriented distro does exist, but because it probably won't be of great interest to most, will be well hidden.
Oh, and if you're using Peanut, have you tried Slackware? AFAIA Peanut is a 'newbie friendly' spin on Slack anyway.
well, while my suggestion is not free it is the one that i like the best. it's also the one that this site uses. vbulletin. the support is great. it's easy to setup/customize.....the hacks are easy to install.....and it works on windows or linux. as long as you have perl installed it will work. gotta love it.
there are some good free one's around but i lack the memory to name them at the moment.......i think phpBBS might be one of them that comes to mind. i've used it but like vbulletin better.
