bbmail set up problem

I've looked and looked and can't find any simple documentation to set up bbmail.

Anyway,my problem is that I've installed it ok in Fluxbox,but presumably I have to feed it some info on my ISP user name and password ...or does it get that automatically from Evolution or my other email client?

Can someone please help me set it up?.I have a bbmail.bb file, but it might as well be written in arabic for all hte help it is.

I have a pop3 mail account and use Fluxbox on RH8,if that's important.

regards
Ludwig

A question before we dive into solving
a "problem" ... what do you think bbmail
does?

Cheers,
Tink

ludwig W 05-14-2003 07:53 PM

I think it notifies you when you have mail

ludwig W 05-14-2003 08:33 PM

why, what do you think it does?

Tinkster 05-14-2003 08:40 PM

Just curious ... I know it works like biff (I don't
use either of them) ... however, it doesn't
know anything about evolution (or other
mail clients for that matter) setup, or even
pop ... but the documentation states that.
Code:

quoted from the README
Pop-support:
You can get the new and total mail information using an external program
(eg. fetchpop), without the need for getting the mail to your machine
(see data/README.bbmail).

Tink

yes, well....thanks.

Like most things I find for Linux, it seems to be written into some sort of linux-speak code.

I thought it could check your pop mail accounts?
I read somewhere of a guy who was configuring it for his pop 3 account.I think it was on this or another forum,after I did a search.
You would think that the people that made it would write a simple ,easy to understand how to ,to get it running. But that,it seems ,is very rare in Linux-world.
I read the .bbmail file and it's totally uninteligable .

personally i like using wmbiff on blackbox, pretty easy to configure and looks good in a slit....

ludwig W 05-15-2003 08:41 AM

Hi Acid:
I've given up on bbmail and have installed wmbiff.
Iwas wondering if you could help me configure it for my pop3 mail.

So far I've
1.Installed (./configure then make then make install)
2.copied sample.wmbiffrc into my home directory as
.wmbiffrc
3.Now I need to edit this .wmbiffrc file and I'm a bit confused by it all.

I guess the bit I need to look at is the
label.3=POP3
# pop3 format: pop3:user: password@server[: port] [auth]
path.3=pop3: user: password@server apop
#notify.3=my_play /home/gb/sounds/new_mail_has_arrived.wav
action.3=rxvt -name mutt -e mutt -f /home/gb/mail/30_nftp-list
interval.3=300 # 5 minutes
fetchinterval.3=-1
fetchcmd.3=fetchmail
bit.

Do you just simply enter in your ISP username and password where it says 'user' and 'password'?

Also,I'm not quite sure what 'password@server[: port] [auth]' is.
What is this port and auth stuff?

and in hte next line 'password@server apop' : what is the server apop ?

thanks for your help,
Ludwig

port is the imap or pop port number, which you shouldn't need to set, auth is for ssl/tls connections i think... not sure, you don't need either though, no idea what apop is, just an example server name i guess.... all i have is:

path.2=imap:chris:password@mailserver

all you need... i'll post my entire file when i get home in a few hours.

thanks acid.
The manual says pop3 Using this type, WMBiff will check for mail on a pop3 server
using the specified username, password, host and an optional
port number (defaulting to 110). If your password contains a
special character, eg. '@' or ':', use the second path for-
mat. See Authentication below for a description of the auth
field.
pop3:user: passwd@server[: port] [auth]
pop3:user passwd server[ port]

Is server the name of my ISP'#s server,do you think?
For example,my ISP is Plusnet and my email is ludwig@zzzzx.plus.com
Would the server be 'plus'?

ludwig W 05-15-2003 08:59 AM

or perhaps 'server ' is the pop 3 server of my ISP.
That would make more sense,wouldn't it?
so that is
mail.plus.net.

what I don't understand about Linux is why hardly anyone who make a program ever writes a clear and easy to understand description of how to install and configure the program.
I've only had Linux about a month, but out of all the hundreds of things I've tried to install, probably only 2 or 3 were simple for a newbie.

It really is quite absurd in my opinion. I mean,how long would it take?
These people spend a long time writing the program and then only experts or old hands can install the thing.

Perhaps for people that have been around Linux for a long time it's not such a big deal,but for people new to linux,it really is incredibly frustrating.

this wmbiff,for example: how long woulf it take to explain in unequivical terms,how to configure it? It would just take one web page.

Sorry,but it just strikes me as really strange ,that's all. :)

ludwig W 05-16-2003 08:28 AM

so,are you going to post your file?

acid_kewpie 05-16-2003 08:36 AM

looks like i forgot huh? i'll try to remember today. 3 hours....

ludwig W 05-16-2003 08:37 AM
