You have to find rpm, or make sure that it is installed.

Try this...

locate -u
locate rpm | grep bin

my rpm command was running previously but suddenly from last week it is not working
whenever irun the command you said, i got following response

[root@sandeep RPMS]# locate rpm | grep bin
/usr/bin/rpmbuild
/usr/bin/rpmgraph
/mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/bind-9.2.1-16.i386.rpm
/mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/bind-utils-9.2.1-16.i386.rpm
/mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/binutils-2.13.90.0.18-9.i386.rpm
/mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/redhat-config-bind-1.9.0-13.noarch.rpm
/mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/ypbind-1.11-4.i386.rpm

Okay, then rpm is missing (you only have "rpmbuild", "rpmgraph", and some *.rpm's). Seems you will have to reinstall. To be one the safe side, try locate rpm without grep -- if the output is manageable, look again in case your version was/is not installed in /sbin or /bin. Good luck.

Hi,

I am facing similar problem too....wondering if anyone has got the solution?
I mean, to reinstall as stated, do you mean reinstall the distribution?
i am wondering....the rpm command...is it itself a rpm package?

if it is, then i can possibly find its rpm and reinstall it...if not, how do i fix it?

thanks for taking time reading my thread,

Regards
Y

What distribution are we talking about here?

Hi,

My case is on rhel3.
I still not sure how to solve it, anyway my rpm command doesnt work at all.

anything that has the rpm word on it doesnt work.

i can't rpm -i or rpm -e or rpm -q anymore. weird problem, searched through internet i can only find people facing problem with rpm hang but not this case....

JZL240I-U 08-07-2006 03:29 AM

Re-install rpm only, of course. That is, if your system is stable for all other issues...

Niceman2005 08-07-2006 08:01 AM

Hi,
thanks for your reply.
How do i actually reinstall the rpm? I tried look for resource regarding reinstall rpm but all it feeds back are those articles regarding rpm -i, rpm -e etc, what i need to know is how to reinstall or fix the actual "rpm" command...coz it seems that this command is not working..

is the rpm command itself a rpm package too? that i uninstall by rpm -e and reinstall again with rpm -i?

if it is, i supposed things won't be hard to fix. pls teach me how...thanks for taking time helping.

Regards
Y

No, that would be installing recursively ;) -- or bootstrapping? Whatever. I meant installation from CD or by YUM (?), that online update service of RedHat's.

I have a similar problem, in fact my both rpm and yum command are not working and when i use them i get the error :command not found. I tried to install rpom using apt-get install rpm ,that too failed and when i tried using apt-get update even that failed.Could you please tell me how to fix the problem ?

Welcome to LQ.

Please state what distribution you are using. If you have CDs / DVDs install from those...

saurabh123 06-22-2007 08:47 AM

i'm using ubuntu distribution and have an AMD 64 bit processor.

JZL240I-U 06-22-2007 08:54 AM

No wonder then ;). Ubuntu is based on debian, their package system is "apt". You have probably no rpm on your system and no use for it there.

What do you want to install? Have you tested ubuntu's repositories (they have at least three AFAIK)?

saurabh123 06-22-2007 08:59 AM

Thanx for your reply but i am new to linux and is not very well familiar with the terminology, so is installing yum and rpm is not required in ubuntu distribution because most of the things (as far as i know) is installed in linux using these two ways
