bad mpg video playback

Just compiled and installed kernel 2.6.7, and am now having trouble with mpg video playback. avi playback is fine. Mp3s can still play. Anyone know what it could be?

[edit]: I guess I could describe what's wrong with the playback: it's very choppy, frames get lost, and eventually, Xine gives up. Kaboodle also has the same problem (with choppiness).

Have you tried MPlayer? I've had problems with Xine before, but never with MPlayer.
