Question Bad mouse pointer shape in appss: xterm, nedit, ...

I am having a problem with mouse-cursor shapes inside application windows on my
newly-installed office system: I get seemingly-random selections from double-arrow,
paragraph-symbol, and other "unusual" mouse-pointers inside Xterms, RXVTs, NEdits,
etc. (My root-window mouse cursor is a left_ptr.)

I'm running KDE under the KRUD-enhanced Fedora Core 1, booting into runlevel 3,
and then starting up X after I log in (I've tried it starting at run-level 5, also...) I am
doing an "xsetroot cursor_name left_ptr" and "xrdb -merge .Xdefaults" in my ".xinitrc";
my ".Xdefaults" has explicit settings for the mouse pointer:
  • Xterm*pointerShape: xterm
  • RXVT*pointerShape: xterm
  • *pointerShape: left_ptr
I'm running an Intel 865-based motherboard with an nVidia GeFORCE 4 video card;
I'm running the vanilla Fedora Core 1 kernel and X drivers (rather than the nVidia
kernel and drivers).

I've been looking around the net for most of the past week, and haven't found
anything helpful... Any suggestions short of changing distros? (I am having no trouble
with Mandrake at home.) Thanks!

geforce cards generally work.
maybe these mandrake guys have just overtuned something in this kernel.
try compile'ng own kernel [from original source without any patches]

cheers,

Thanks, but it's the Fedora Core 1 that isn't working, not the Mandrake. I once had
this trouble before with RH9, but I don't remember what I did to fix it... ;-(

BTW, explicit "xrdb -merge .Xdefaults" after-the-fact doesn't help, either, nor
does an explicit "-xrm" flag when I launch an xterm.

Maybe it was a typo, but I thought it was:

$ xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr # You left out the dash; in this case though it would just default to the X cursor

Also you might want to make sure you have left_ptr on your machine:

$ find /usr -iname left_ptr

There should be a bitmaps directory within the X11 directory with it inside.

Smile Solution: Device / Option "sw-cursor"

The "xrdb" thing _was_ a typo.
