Any ideas what I may have done to cause backups of all files I create to automatically be made?
They seem to be created in the same location as the originals but I suspect it might be links to the backups that are appearing not the actual backups.
To exit them I am not sure what that means. I create the text file with Kate. To be more accurate the "backup" does not appear on the desktop (KDE) until I enter some text in the original and save it.
I can open and close a file all day and the "backup" does not appear until I do like I said above.
Any ideas where I could find settings to change this. The odd thing is I almost certainly did this through a GUI app. But cant be 100% sure. I have done some things on the command line that I did not really understand what I was doing while trying to follow instructions to install and or modify things.
By exit, I meant edit... typo.
Kate has some options to control the naming convention used for backup files... Go to settings -> configure kate -> editor -> open/save. At the bottom of that section you should see "Backup on Save", and in there some options to change the backup file naming convention.
