backspace key printing ^? in vim

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
on my redhat 9 system, backspace in vim works as expected. but when i rlogin to a redhat 7.3 machine on my network, when i type backspace in vim, it prints ^? instead of deleting the character that the cursor is on. why does it do this and how can i fix it?

thank you.

just after you have logged into the remote machine type...
stty erase (and then press the backspace key, which will hopfully type ^?) then hit enter.

"stty erase CHAR" lets you set the key 'CHAR' to be the key for backspace (left-delete)

no, it doesn't...=( when i press "backspace" in the shell, it actually deletes the char that the cursor is on. its only in vim where it prints ^?

you could try going through different term settings by typing

:set term=ansi (in vim)

there are other terminal types or if you have a .vimrc file in your homedir it should be possible to map keys to backspace in that. (something like set t_ku=^[OA would fix the up arrow key etc. - not sure what the set t_?? is for backspace though)
