AVI files with linux

i would like to know what do you use to read avi file with linux?

i received a great linux avi on the birth of linux and i can't see it with windows (i have only the sound) it say that i don't have the write codex...
I would like to give it a try with linux (I have RH8) but nothing seems to open avi files...
Can someone tells me what should i do?
