Authentication failed

Hi,

I am using Red Hat Linux 9

Let me describe a bit of the problem.
When i try to login to the system (locally, telnet) the following message come out with "Authentication failed" (window pop out in local machine, directly disconnect when i used telnet).

I did the linux rescue from the CD and found that the contain /etc/passwd, /etc/group, /etc/shadow still in it.

What could be the possible problems and what the cause?
Thank you very much.

Hi leeml,

Pl. let me know: have you done any firewall or password related changes before the problem occurred? In case authentication method changed, this problem may occur.

try running Authentication Configuration Tool "redhat-config-auth" from shell prompt in desktop. Ensure that you have default configuration. Since I don't know much about this, I can't explain more on this. But I have faced the same problem some times before and get the things done as simple as i have told.

with wishes

Hi KaruppuSwamy.T,

I have found out what goes wrong. Thank for your help.

Basically it is because i configured the authentication pointing to our internal ldap server. Because some thing goes wrong with our DNS and cause the system couldn't resolve ldap server name which i configured to point to at my system. Therefore the error comes out.

Thank you very much.
