audio problem - underrun

Hi,

According to alsamixer, I have a Realtek ALC655 audio chip on an Intel ICH5 "card" (it's
integrated on the motherboard, actually).

I can play ogg files with ogg123 without any problem. ogg123 reports that it
uses ALSA output as the audio device.

However, whenever I play music with other programs than ogg123 (like mplayer,
play, or aplay), the sound sometimes get interrupted. aplay, the player which comes
with ALSA, is very explicit: it reports "underrun!!". These underruns happen randomly.
They are a nuisance. I would like to be able to play wav files without having
to oggenc them first...

How can I get rid of these underruns ? And how come ogg123 is not affected ?!

Much thanks in advance.
