Audio CD not getting detected on OpenSuse 11.2 (Xfce 4.6)

Operating system : OpenSuse 11.2
Desktop environment : Xfce 4.6
Kernel : Default

All other CD's do get detected on the above mentioned platform on my laptop, but the 4 new Audio CD's I've brought do not get detected there.

By detection I mean:
i. No icon is shown on the desktop.
ii. ls -R /media/ shows nothing.

Those Audio CD's do get detected on a different laptop with OpenSuse 10.3 with Kde 3.5.7 on it !!

Kindly let me know if I need to give more information regarding the above problem.

Please guide !

By default Audio CD (aka CDDA) do not get "detected" by Linux, and I belive most OSs behave this way by default
However if you put the disc in the drive and open your favorite audio/cd player app it should find them.

I notice on your other system, which is running KDE, you say it detects them. That is because the people at KDE have put some majic in that "detects" them. It then provides you with some sort of interface to save them as mp3(s) etc.

:)

Many thanks to you for this useful information !

Let me try and see if the audio/cd player detects them.

Now I installed 'Banshee' player and it properly detected the Audio CD and so I could hear the Audio CD.

I wanted to copy these songs on my hard disk. I pressed Import Audio CD button. And the application started copying songs in the music folder.

Problem:

The size of a particular song on Audio CD was about : 55 MB
The size of that particular song after importing on hard disk was about : 6.9 MB

Obiously it had been compressed.

No, I don't want it to be compressed, I want the original 55 MB song on my harddisk..

Kindly guide..how can I achieve that ?

I've never used Banshee so i can't give exact directions. But it would seem it's converting them to mp3 format.
Have a look around the menus and options in banshee, there you should find something about the encoder options.

Also go to their website and i'm sure you will find some documentation describing how to do it.

Another also, if your having problems with banshee and want to ask specific questions about it then i suggest you start a new thread. As other people will be able to see your new questions easier

:)

Thanks for replying!

I didn't ask any question regarding banshee player. I just wanted to know how to copy the songs from the Audio CD to my harddisk without compressing them ..
