ATI drivers dont enable openGL

I installed the ATI drivers and did fglrxconfig and then started xwindws. then I did fgl_glxgear and it came up with this response
Error: couldn't get fbconfig

fglrxinfo come up with:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 4.0.4

and quake3 says it cant find openGL.

does anybody know what the problem could be?

ok, found the problem

Im on a Nforce 2 board, and apparently I had set 'UseInternalAGPGART' to 'yes' during the config, which uses the AGPGART module that comes with the ATI driver, whereas I should have set it to 'no' so it would use the correct driver that I compiled as a module for my kernel.

once I set the correct GART driver I had to reboot (beats me on why, but reting the X server didnt work). now I can play quake3, BZflag, and I get 4000FPS on glxgears
