ASUS A7V promise ATA100 boot problem ....

Hello. I have the ASUS A7v133 motherboard and have just recompiled my kernel for promise controller support. After adding the 'append ide2=0x9400,0x9002 ide3=0x8800,0x8402" to my lilo.conf to pick up the addresses to the ide's and changing the 'hda' entries to 'hde' and then doing the same to /etc/fstab to point to the new root and swap I am getting some problems. The machine successfully boots. However, during the boot process
when the text is being displayed as to what is loading etc I get this or similiar>

hda: irq probe failed (someaddress)
hda: resetting drive

this happens a few times then it finally detects my hardrive and cd-rw on
hde and hdg

then successfully boots.
Is there a way to stop this probing for drives that are no longer on hda?
any help appreciated.

thanks
