Apply user changes without relogin

I change a user, e.g. add him to a new group, etc. and need to apply the changes. The only way i found where i don't have to log out is by running a new shell. This doesn't change already running applications, e.g. Xorg.
How can i apply all the changes to /etc/group, /etc/passwd etc. immediately without re-login?

Hi 10110111,

The changes to the files /etc/passwd etc do take place immediately, but the already running processes do not re-read these files at any point. The only way is as you found, log out or spawn a new shell,

cheers,

kbp
