I registered a domain name with register.com. My cable isp has a host name for my ip. I expect my ip will change it has in the past. What I've been doing is just accessing my ftp and apache from browsers using the ip. This works but now i have the domain name. Heres the question:

My cable host name already resolves to whatever ip my isp assigns me. I can direct the domain name I bought to that Ip as well. Problem is if they change the ip I will have to go in and change it and wait for it to propagate thru dns world. If I just had a way to foward all dns inquires to my web domain name to my isp host name I never have to worry about cable people changing my ip.

can it be done and if so tell me how cause I can't find it anywhere

Ah my fellow New Jersian. Unfortunately we must use Comacast for cable modem and as I'm sure you know comacast is one of the worst ISP's. Anyway, comacast does not release IPs for a long time. You are assigned your IP by your MAC address. As long as you access the net using the same MAC address you will keep your IP for about 6 months. Then they do a release/renew. Also you can not get a static IP from comcast. They just don't offer it. Its a real pain but we are limited in our choices.

I know there is software out there that lets you fix this type of situation but I'm not exactly sure what it is called. If your not running anything really important you can just do what I do and make sure your IP hasn't changed. Mine has only changed once in the last 6 months and when it did I just went to my registrar and changed the IP. It only took like an hour for it to propagate through the DNS world. Only one hour of down time ain't to bad.

So you choose to use register's dns servers then or what did you do.

I got my domain through domainmonger.com When the IP address changes I just go there and switch it.

thats all you did is just register with them and put your ip in and let it go. hmmmm maybe i'll leave well enough alone then. how long did it take you to get a good nslookup on your domian name

Well I had to do some set up on my box like set my nameservers to the domainmonger ones.

ns1.domainmonger.com
ns2.domainmonger.com

It took like an hour or so.
