apache newbie guide

ok i have done several google serches for howto's on apache, but most of them go right over my head. and those that dont cover items in apache i dont need yet.

i just need to learn some of the basics like how to configure security for keeping hackers out.

every security serch i do i get how to configure LDAP, and SSH and other functions i really dont need YET for my little site.

www.SunStateMartialArts.com is the basic site i am having to move from its current host to my apache server. nothing fancy on that site, just a few jpg, some mpegs, and some pdf files for downloading.

no need to login, no need for FTP, or any of those advanced fetures that might someday be used but not now.

also how to i activate the access_log and error_log's? i did a su -, then whereis access_log and came back with nothing.

i have the server up and running on the local LAN for now, not going public with it until i know enough to be comfortable with tracking the stability and security of the site.

again, sorry for the newB questions, but every day i learn a little more.

*sidenote* how hard will slackware 9.1 be to configure and install compaired to RH9. it would appear that RH no longer suppports their RHN without paying for it, so im going to drop RH completly and put either slackware or debian as my server, but sadly i can not get a clean ISO from that blasted jigido thingy and finding pure ISOs for debian is turning into a pain, and the one btitorrent i found is not up and running atm.

for security issues look no further than lq security forum

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=45261

for apache the online documentation is more than adequate, w/ton's of guides

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/

http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/

for debian iso have a look at linuxiso

http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=4

hope that helps.
good luck.

the security forum is one of the forums here at lq. the link was to a specific thread that gives references and howto's etc.
