Do you mean access your site by an actual domain name? If so, you need to register a domain name with a domain name registrar, like www.networksolutions.com or www.register.com

Their fairly expensive, I actually use www.domain-s.com which usually run around 9 bucks, USD that is.

Trickykid-

Good words, however, if dude really wanted to be el-cheapo, he could check out the services (Dynamic or Static DNS hosting) that dyndns.org provides.

Then dude can also have fun figuring out how to set up the L(inux)A(pache)M(ysql)P(hp) on his machine. Shed some 'light' on things.

And wait- more fun to be had, yet!

Dyndns.org will "alias" an IP address fo' free. And, as we all know- newbies and moderators alike, the best things in life are phree. They have a lot of addresses- most popular being, of course,

*.dyndns.org
yourname.dyndns.org

Peace ;]

then for the final hoot he will have to poke a hole in his firewall on port 80 so that his server can be seen from the 'outside'

True, but only if he wants a domain to be part of the dyndns.org type address, etc. To me, it might be simple for some and cheap, but myself I like having my own real domain. Just looks and seems more professional, easier to remember, etc.

Oh well, guess we won't know til he responds.
