you don't log on as it ever. it's an account that the server uses in order to be able to operate correctly. you should only ever use root and accounts you've created yourself

You mean apache account is restricted even for the system admin ? Is it some kind of special account where no body can login ?

Two perl scripts in the /var/www/cgi-bin that came with apache have apache as owner and group. Is this necessary for any script in the Cgi-bin directory ?

there are many 'users' that are not for human living eatnig walking type users to use. What do you expect to get out of being apache that you can't do as root?

certain users are created for services which require special rights to resources. files, devices etc... it makes security better and such like

The point to apache having its own account is that it, as well as a bunch of other dummy users, [cat /etc/passwd] and see how many fake users are there, will not have things like a passworded account, or a shell, or a number of other abilities that would be a headache for them to have if some 3l33t |-|aX0r got access to the account.

Hope that makes sense.

Cheers,
