another mplayer sound problem. cant find pertinent solution.

I have been using linux about 6 months, and usually can solve most problems on my own, (thanks to this site). I havent been able to solve this issue with mplayer and it's driving my nutz.
I use suse distro 9.2 on a Pentium 4 system I built
I use mplayer not gmplayer and have recently aqquired a movie that I cannot get working properly. At first I got no picture or sound. I upgraded to the latest release of mplayer(MPlayer 1.0pre7try2-3.3.4) and have an excellent picture but no sound.
I have never had problems with mplayer as long as the file was a real movie, and not a virus aimed at some unsuspecting MS user.
any way here is the message I get when I load the movie.
Code:

roller24@linux:~> mplayer  /home/roller24/Music/emilyrose/[NewTorrents.info]_Exorcism.of.Emily.Rose.TC.xVID-LRC/CD1/ex.cd1.lrc.avi

Ive tried ao- help and used all four options
and get a nosound error message.
This seems to pick up all the sound codecs but cannot initiate them.

In case any of that helps you solve it.
