aMSN kills linux

hi, i've got a question and a problem:

qst: i have debian unstable, with the kernel 2.4.18 bf 24, and i compiled the 2.4.24, made both files System.map-$version and bzImage, put them in their right places, and modified lilo, and reboot and all OK (all seems the same), but initrd is still 2.4.18-bf2.4, could it make any problem?

prblm: in that linux, i've installed amsn (with apt and from source) and i can use it by 5 minutes, and screens turns black, and then apears garbage and then the whole system hangs (i can't change the console) and i got to reboot. Also i close amsn and log out, and gdm blinks 3 times after it appears. All this is executed by a simple user.

Thanks for any help, excuse my english.

1) It could be a problem, but doesn't have to. Actually, the really interesting question is: Why do you need an initrd?
2) Sorry, but I don't know what amsn is...

it's nvidia's guilt

it's the nvidia graphic driver, simply randomly hangs, with the 2.4.18 kernel i installed the drivers and they ran ok, with the 2.4.24, i had to reinstall them (gcc 3.3.3), and now they randomly hangs(after a firts startx). Right now i'm with the nv driver only.

for the first question, i made an initrd for the 2.4.24 and reboot and i got a kernel panic.

I don't know about the nvidia stuff...
But you didn't say why you need an initrd. Try to boot without it. There aren't so many reasons for using an initial ramdisk...

i don't know why may i need an initrd, i think it's to jump to the "/" partition, a program that says umount and mount /dev/hd?, so an initrd could work for 2.2 , 2.4 , 2.6 ... Also i think it must content modules for filesystems that wasn't built in the kernel... who knows?

initrd is kinda deprecated now.
are you using the latest nvidia driver? the 5xxx? i think that has few bugs, and u should try the 4xxx which seems ok to me.

### my lilo.conf ###
...
boot=/dev/hda6
root=/dev/hda7 # many partitions...
install=/boot/boot-menu.b
map=/boot/map # it's the System.map like in RH?
# the kernel compilation also create a System.map-$version
# and i don't put it here ...
...
default=Linux-2.6.0

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.24
label=Linux-2.4.24
read-only
# initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.24
# if enabled => kernel panic ....
# it's the only mention about any initrd in this file

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.0-p1
label=linux-2.6.0
read-only
...

yes, NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5328-pkg1.run, the same i used with the 2.4.24, and with the 2.6.0 working fine at this time.

thanks for the advice
