Am I a bad person for switching to KDE?

Well here's my story i've been using Linux off and on for about 3 years now, loving it more now then I did back then. Well I've always used either Gnome for my window manager up until last week when I discovered the wonders of Fluxbox :). Fluxbox was faster then Gnome and it pretty much ran the exact same apps even prettier I might add. But then tonight I tried KDE 3.1 for the first time (the last time I tried KDE was back in version 1 or 2 I think). Anyway I'm loving how pretty it is, how it uses the correct fonts without me having to edit some init files, or running a prog to supposedly edit the init files. It seems to be pretty speedy as well. (Current Linux box is a Latitude C600) But alas my problem is I feel so dirty using something this easy and idiot proof. Please tell me I am wrong in my feelings and that I shouldn't feel this way.

ShimmyT and Slack 9 go together like beans and cornbread!

Yes, you are horrible for that. :) No, I like to use window managers most of the time but it is relaxing to go to something easy and idiot proof like kde.

Anybody feel free to feel any way.
If you feel that way, go for something difficult.
The ones who like the things that make life easier would use it.

KDE is sweeeet! There isn't any shame in using KDE at all... You should be ashamed you didn't use it earlier.. :P I have yet to talk to a single linux user that doesn't use it. It's great. :)

obviously you are not a bad person. KDE is a very nice desktop manager (even though i use fluxbox). The only thing i dont like about it is that the newbies think that the only way to make changes to their system is through the KDE control center and other windows-type tools. Its hard to break away from that and learn what's really going on... just my opinon.

moeminhtun 08-05-2003 10:18 PM

No. I don't use KDE. It's slow. Even slower than Gnome.

KDE has become too much of a "nanny" desktop environment.

KDE can be even faster if one were to turn off un-needed Eye Candy. KDE is more custom-izable to a certain extent then other window managers. Dig deep down and play with it, go into every nook and cranny and see what can and can't be done. And also install Mosfet's High Performance Liquid, and play with this app and see how much more "Prettier" KDE can be than it's default look. goto kde-look.org and see all the extra window decorations, icons, themes, splash screens, color schemes and other stuff that can make KDE even more custom-izable............

KDE is fun once in a while, when I'm showing linux for someone's first time look (I mean with all the eye candy and all) and sometimes when I'm playing in KDevelop, it feels more comfy to work in.

Most of the time tho, I love blackbox, but there's nothing wrong with using KDE (Or Gnome for that matter) :D

It all comes down with what you're comfortable with...linux is about personal choice too.

andrewlkho 08-06-2003 09:31 AM

there's nothing wrong with it, it's just whether or not you like it personally or not.....personally, it's just to heavyweight for me, i like nice small windowmanagers - if you like it, then go for it. it wasn't me who said "make a system that a fool can use, and only a fool will want to use it :)

True, yes, but is that quote not referring to Windoze?

spork545 08-06-2003 11:11 AM

i like kde, just because it looks nice..and since my system is fairly good i dont see much a speed difference using any of the window managers (though i haven't used flux yet so i can't speak for that one. besides, eyecandy is fun!

nakkaya 08-06-2003 04:08 PM

it is not a shame to use kde or gnome all the time i use shell to connect to my servers so i spend lots of time in black and white screen(execept i see some color in emacs huraaa for font lock) any way after that time it is good to see something eye candy using window maker gnome or kde doesnt make you a newbie or a guru it is just a personal taste use gnome as your main enviroment but know other know how to configure them all that will make you a guru and one more think guy who wrote them are pro programmers rigth but they use them :)

JayCnrs 08-06-2003 05:19 PM

I enjoy the eyecandy of KDE and find the tools to be very straight forward, when I feel like going lighter I switch to IceWM but find myself using KDE programs anyway, so most times I just use KDE, loading may be a little slower then other WM but once it is started I find it just as fast.

Just my :twocents:

zLinuxz 08-07-2003 04:00 AM

Yes you are a disgrace!, just kidding, :-p
but really....I don't like KDE. Ever since I began using linux back in 97, Gnome has always been better than KDE....and to my appreciation it still is, :D
Gnome is beauty at its best!
