Alternative to Wine
 
Has anyone found an alternative to Wine to run Windows programs in Linux? Haven't had much luck with Wine 1.1.31 as Access keeps crashing, and some of the earlier models of Wine I used in the past were even worse...

The actual stable version is 1.2.2, the development version is 1.3.17, so i would assume to try that newer versions. The application database entry for Access shows that it should run even with older versions.

My recommendation: If you can't run a Windows application in Wine, you should at first try to find a Linux application that fits your needs. If you really have to use that application, than run it with Windows, either in a dual-boot configuration or in a virtual machine.

Can you use Openoffice Base, a linux application like MS's Office.

For a better wine then the commercial product is getting better all the time.

There is or used to be a discount to LQ members for it too.

For basic old dos and W3.x and some W95 apps dosbox has been pretty good.

Any virtual machine works greats but it ends up being a real xp install.

If you don't want to fool with a VM in XP might consider trying ReactOS.

Doesn't ReactOS use Wine to implement its core API, though? If that's the case, this would be no better (and in fact might actually be worse) for the OP's needs.

I'm going to have to download the trial, the garmin spoftware for my gps the newer versions do not run on wine and their new basecamp uses .net so its slow even on windows.

I can't say it would be better or worse but it is a choice and I would not hesitate to try it.

Just tried a ReactOS live cd. Didn't even pick up the mouse.

There isn't an option to use OpenOffice for this project, but it would be nice not to have to use the Windows partition at all. Virtual Box is an option, but need a better cpu.

Unfortunately, I haven't found one version of Wine which actually worked properly for me.
