Unhappy ALSA problem - High pitched sound

I'm having a strange problem with my sound. I'm running debian sid with the 2.6.3 kernel and ALSA 0.9.

If i run TWM first, sound is fine. Whenever i load KDE3.2, the sound gets all messed up, distorted, and really high pitched. If i close KDE and go back to TWM, the sound remains messed up :/

I've tried running alsaconf to fix it, but as soon as it finished doing it's thing, my speakers start making a really loud high pitched noise, and i have to turn the speakers off.

I've tried purging alsa-base and alsa-utils and reinstalling them, but the problem's still there.

I'm clueless here, please help!
