ALSA mixer settings preserve?

Everytime I boot up I get a message that my ALSA mixer needs to be set up.

Each time I go into alsamixer and unmute and adjust the levels but they default to off when I reboot.

How can I make these remember their settings?

to store your alsamixer setting in /etc/asound.state
