First of all a while back I read on here a few people trying to make the Echo Gina 24 soundcard run on linux and couldn't find a distro that will run it. I have tried quite a few distro's and found the biggest thing to look for is a 2.6 kernel. It comes with alsa already on it and seems to be the difference. On a 2.4 kernel (Slackware for example), it will not even recognize the Gina 24 at all. I have compiled and ran it on Suse 9.2 and on Kanotix. Suse being much more of a problem especially when trying to compile the echomixer. Alot of the xfree86 packages needed to compile this are pretty tough to find, mainly becuase Suse really runs better if you use thier packages exclusively. Kanotix however proved to be pretty simple, with 1 note. After you compile it. following the directions on Alsa-project.org, make sure to add in their module for debian. Run the update-modules, but don't bother trying to modprobe the card until you reboot the system. Also note to turn off the kde sound system before you even compile alsa. Arts seems to mess with it.
That leads to my 1 problem, when Kanotix is installed it already has alsa on the kernel and because it can't read the gina 24 it boots with a dummy driver. At bootup I get a modprobe error that it can't find the card. This doesn't tamper with the gina 24 after i boot into KDE, however I have to modprobe snd-gina24 from the terminal everytime i reboot the system. For the life of me after going through the alsa /etc/init.d/ and the alsa module can not find where to change this so it will just boot the gina 24. I would appreciate your help and if anybody needs help installing a Gina 24 card into Kanotix or Suse email me or catch me on yahoo messenger.
P.S i really hope there is a way to do this without recompiling the entire kernel, Kanotix is all Debian Sid so it isn;t 100% stable to begin with. Although i must say I tend to get really good results with it
