Alsa and ESD

I wanted to check, is it normal for alsa not to be usable if esd is on?

When esd is running, I can't get applications to output to alsa. They report that the device is busy.

Also, is esd a good output choice for movie/multimedia applications, or will it eventually loose A-V sync?

I apologize if these are basic questions - I am in the process of changing distos and I don't remember ever receiving this kind of error.

You shouldn't have any problem, open gconf-editor and check system -> gstreamer -> 0.10 or 0.8 -> default;
audiosrc
audiosink

What should they be set to?

Once these are set, it will enable me to output to both alsa and esd?

I seem to have fixed this problem by installing libesd-alsa0 and removing libesd0.
