afterstep behaviour

Hi guys, I am experiencing a strange behaviour of afterstep window manager, I downloaded the latest stable release of afterstep, installed it and now when using gnome and switching to afterstep it works fine untill I log out, when I try to log in again I am represented with the gnome desktop without the panel and without other virtual desktops, in order to get the afterstep again I have to run the wm-properties-capplet and switch to sawfish and back to afterstep. Has anyone experienced the same or similar behaviour? I'd like to get some feedback on this one.
Thanks.
Neo.
