Adventures in old Kernels, part 2

Part 1 dealt with creating a zImage. In this part I am going to deal with building a 2.7.2.3 compiler on modern machines (including Ubuntu Trusty) that can be used to create the 2.0.XX kernels.

Why not build in virtual machine? The hard disks size in 2.0.* kernels era was '4Gb, enough for everyone' (quite possibly even less, 3.5G was what I was using for 2.2.* series installations).

Yes that is definitly an option. I did have a specific reason for what I was doing.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who actually needs to do this and how the advice worked for them.

The background is the machine I am doing the building on is i686 GNU/Linux 4.2.0-42-generic 14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP. It has GCC 4.8.4

The first step was to get gcc 2.9.53 built and working. The key thing here is that the compiler only needs to compile C programs.

Follow the link for a description of How to build gcc-2.95.3 in Ubuntu

Yes, obviously, but what was it? Just having a weak-ish machine?
