ADSL modem

I'm finally about to get a ADSL line, after years wasted on a 56k.
Can someone reccomend a modem that is fully supported by Linux and easy to set up without additional drivers (If possible).
Or can i just stick the phone cable into my NIC? But how do i get a IP for the NIC then?
Any suggestions
Thanks

Any non-USB will do, I mean the one that connects to your NIC via RJ45, I don't know much about internal modems.

To answer the second part, if the NIC was used in LAN setup, and now you decided to get xDSL, then if you don't want to shell out extra for a router or/and switch or/and HUB, and you want your linux box to manage routing for your LAN you need a second NIC, so it all comes to NIC setup and drivers. Do you know if you will get a dynamic or static IP? I am about to get my speakeasy line provisioned with 2 static IP's, shell account, news servers with 1Gb quota no xtra $$$, plus I can have my site finally hosted on my own webserver w/o dynadns or any other poop along the way, and it is all for 60 bucks with 608 down 128 up.

Mine should 640 DOWN and about 120 UP, dynamic IP. Yes i realize i will need another NIC, but if i decide to plug the phone cable to the NIC how does the NIC get a different IP every time i connect? Is it possible at all or do i need a modem in modem in case of dynamic IP? I also get a free www.mydomain.com with the offer, and all is about 60 Euros, plus another 50 each month. I can't wait to get a faster connection so i can finally DOWNLOAD, DOWNLOAD, DOWNLOAD!
Does anybody know if i can use gtk-gnutella to leech movies from the net? My friend uses kazaa on windows and downloads loads of movies..
Thanks for help/suggestions

Well you can get whatever you please with gtk-gnutella - it is able to fetch files from Morpheus/Kazaa servers/clients. As for IP assignment - there are two methods of assigning dynamic IP through xDSL:
1. Using PPPoE - point-to-point protocol over ethernet. It sums up to you "dialing out" to your ISP, login in to the ISP's servers and getting IP.
2. Plain DHCP assignment, it only requires your NIC to get IP using DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). All is done through /sbin/netconfig
So if you have problems setting up just shout it out - we'll help

kernel 2.4.19 with PPPoE and latest pppd (2.4.2 i think) work nice.
Setup ppp (pap/chap-secrets etc)
grab another nic, run it up without an IP and start pppd

ie
# ifconfig ethx up
# pppd eth0

Works a treat

most isp's don't require any of that ppp jukn though, usually you can just slap on a dhcp setting and thats it.

It seems quite opposite here in US, here ISP push through PPPoE - I've had enough headaches with earthlink and PPPoE goop - damn my IP was changing once every 15-20 minutes, I hope the webhosting home for rpmfind will give me more reliable DSL experience, plus I am getting static IP's which earthlink couldn't give me 'cause "Your TELCO doesn't support static IP's" - these are exact words I got from an earthstink support tech.

Pretty much all ADSL providers here in australia require PPPoE.
