Adjusting screen resolution on a laptop

I have a Toshiba Portege 7200 laptop I have just installed Linux Mandrake 7.2 (corrupt copy of 8.0 forced me to use 7.2).
The problem is in X only about 3 quarters of the actual monitor size is showing, ie I have a 1" thick black line going around the edge of the screen.
I tried using drakconf bit when I clicked on it a small box popped up on the screen for a split second then disappeared.
How do I change the screen resolution so it takes up the full monitor???????
Any idea's anyone?

Try:

ctrl/alt/+

If not, run Xconfigurator

No ctrl/alt/+ dosent work on a laptop, I havent got the extra + & - key's on the right of the keyboard.
When I ran Xconfigurator it asked me what video card driver & nothing about the resolution.
In the end I just re-installed Mandrake & picked the correct resolution at the installaton & problem solved
Thanks anyway
