"Add/remove software" does not work

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
I am very interested Linux though I never know Linux before. I installed fedora on virtual PC in Win XP. Now I can not use “ Add/remove software” button, it say “unable to retrieve the software information”. both my pc and fedora can connect with internet. I read the following article, but I can not understand it completely. Anyone can give some direction to solve the problem and how to get some book, simple article or video on it? Many thanks to you.

In FC-5, Add & Remove doesn't work without a 'tweak': http://www.city-fan.org/tips/YumRepoFromImages Of course, if you've got a decent speed on the net, it's far better to use yum for installation issues since the programs on the CD's have already gone through several updates.

Which version of Fedora are you using? If you are using Fedora 5, then you are using an old and unsupported version...

The latest version if Fedora 10...

Also other things to check...

Is your firewall on in Fedora? XP? Router?
Are you NATing on your VM or is it bridged?

Some more info would be helpful

Thank you so much for your reply!!!

I am using Fedora 5. After I installed fedora5 on XP, I did nothing but try to “Add/remove software” function. But it do not work.

My firewalls are desabled

I am using NATing on my XP and VM, and get ip address from a server. Both xp and fedora use same NIC since my computer have only this NIC. but both can connect with internet. I do not know how to do in next step.

Thank you

You will not get any updates for FC5 because support was ended in 2007,so add/remove programs will not work also when you want to install something.Have you considered downloading and installing newer version. Here is the latest stable version.

Fedora 5 is no longer supported...so that's why Add/Remove software isn't working.

Fedora 10 is the most up to date release.

Thanks for your message. After I used fedora 10 and vmware, the problem doesn’t exist again.

You need to go to "Subscribed Threads" link and then at the bottom of that page you'll see; Selected Threads: where you can choose what to do with them.
