adding pci device ids to pci.ids

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, so here goes.

I have been told that uppercase hex addresses should not be used in pci.ids as they cause errors.

However I've heard from others that this is not the case and in my experience (just playing around) everything works fine as long as there are no duplicate entries.

Does anyone have a definitive answer;if so also a link explaining any standards for pci.ids that would be great.
