How do I Add 2nd distro to existing - partioning best practices

I have FC5 installed currently as the only thing. I have a 30GB drive. Do I need to set-up space first before trying to install another distro or will the next distro through it's partioning set-up suffice? I was going to pre-partion with qtparted but I got a little confused because it saw my ext3 partion as an unknown partion. Is this because of LVM? I guess I don't know where to start. I don't care about sharing files between the two and I wish to install Arch as the 2nd distro.

i perfer to use qt parted to repartition first. I feel like it is safer altough it is probaly just the same. Where were you running qt parted from. It is best if you are not using the drive when you partition. Try running from a livecd like System Rescue CD.

If I run qtparted from the rescue cd and resize the drive will it play nicely with lvm?
