Added users: Access denied

Hi,

Everytime I add a user using useradd (logged in as root) everything seems to go right, the entries are added (as far as I can see) succesfully to /etc/passwd however, everytime a user tries to login, he gets the error "access denied".

Anybody who can make a guess what I 'm doing wrong?

EDIt: I'm quite a linux noob, and I fully forgot to look in /etc/shadow now I discover that the passwords aren't encrypted. How should I crypt them while adding?
