Accessing RAM-Resident Squash Filesystem

I am using a JTAG debugger to develop an embedded Linux target. I want my JTAG runtime environment to be as close to my FLASH (non-debug) runtime environment as possible, so I want to download the root Squash Filesystem to RAM via JTAG for use by the kernel. How can I easily configure the kernel so it will look for the root filesystem in RAM rather than FLASH.

Is RAMDISK or ROOT_NFS the only way to do this? I would rather not use these because they would be a significant depart from my non-debug environment.

I can't answer your question, but the guys at openwrt.org know all about embedded Linux kernels, FLASH and JTAG, particularly MIPS. You could also try linuxdevices.com.
