accesing the video Ram through Gcc

I want to Know the way through which i can access the Video Ram and read the Data in it through C program. I came to know that X windows will display the desktop of a system by reading the Video Ram . So,I want to know how it is implented In X Server using ' C ' language. I would be very grateful if you give the required solution along with the code needed to do it.
