Question AC'97 and mandrake 8.2?

I have a MSI Kt7266 Pro2 motherboard that has the built in AC 97 sound card. I installed Mandrake 8.2 and couldn't get the AC'97 to work. I downloaded drivers from VIAtech but it won't work because it was designed for an older kernel..Anything else I can do?

Welcome to LQ.

What did you try to get the sound drivers to work?

Have you tried typing modprobe ac97? I am pretty sure that there are drivers for it (called modules). Try looking in the directory /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/sound (or something) and see if there's a file called ac97.o. If so, this is the driver, and it should load with the modprobe command above.

Hope this helps, good luck and have fun with Linux.

This website has the answers

I had the same problem. Go to:

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/K7s5a-HOWTO.html
Title: The Elite's K7s5a mainboard HOWTO
Subtitle: How to use Elite's K7s5a mainboard under GNU/Linux.

click on the link "2.3 Kernel Approach: The AC'97 Driver"

I typed "modprobe i810_audio" --> now mp3s and audio CD work fine. Note: I did not get terminal output like the article says. No biggie, but weird. I have not rebooted yet, so I may still need to issue the "echo..." command like the article says. If that doesn't work, I'll try to remember to post here again.
